2021 RACGP Foundation Charles Bridges-Webb Memorial Award

The RACGP has established an award in memory of one of its most dedicated researchers, Professor Charles Bridges-Webb AO. Charles became a member of the RACGP in 1959, and was an inspiration and a wise mentor for generations of general practice researchers in Australia. He was awarded both the Rose Hunt Award and Life Fellowship of the RACGP and was Director of the RACGP NSW&ACT research unit until June 2010.

Professor Bridges-Webb was also recognised by the Australian Association for Academic Primary Care through Life Membership and by the World Health Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) through Fellowship, the most prestigious award of the international organisation awarded to individuals who have rendered outstanding service to primary care and family medicine at a global level.

Award details

The award of up to $1,000 (excluding GST) is available to pay for direct research costs associated with the conduct of any study that has ethics approval and is deemed to have relevance to general practice, health care, health outcomes or health professional education.

Direct research costs include any item or service that materially contributes to the collection and analysis of data relevant to the aims of the research project. For instance, it can include payments to practices for participation in a research project, payment for equipment and disposables, payment for paper or photocopying, telephone calls, data entry and statistical help.

Eligibility

General practice registrars who have recently undertaken, will undertake, or are currently undertaking an academic term in a University Department or Discipline of General Practice or Rural Health are eligible to apply. Other research placements will be considered on their merits.

Selection criteria

Applicants will be assessment against the following criteria:

  • training potential for applicants 30%
  • scientific quality of the research project 30%
  • significance and either originality or innovation 20%
  • feasibility of carrying out and completing the research 10%
  • potential to build capacity in general practice research 10%
